THE EQUINIX APPROACH TO CLOUD STRATEGY

How do IT industry analysts rate Equinix enterprise cloud solutions?

Analyst firm 451 Research examines the Equinix strategic approach to enterprise cloud computing in a recent report. This includes their examination of an Equinix model for evaluating cloud services, focusing on three operational elements: Data, Networks and Application performance – or 'DNA':

  • Data: Data growth today is exponential. Every element is stored in multiple places, and every data instance must be managed and kept secure and private. Some of Equinix's enterprise customers want to migrate data from the cloud into private storage. Others would prefer to keep data outside of the cloud as a starting point, looking to the cloud principally as a processing resource.
  • Networks: Equinix brings a depth of network expertise and extensive service capabilities. The network component is not one-size-fits-all for cloud applications. Equinix focuses on three types of network connections to the cloud; the Internet, Ethernet and direct connections. For most companies, the approach selected will not be one model, but perhaps all three types of cloud connections.
  • Application performance: This final dimension for cloud planning examines the expectations for application response and performance under production volumes, including the average workload and anticipated peak workloads. When it comes to performance of cloud applications, with Equinix an enterprise can 'own the base and rent the peaks'.
